Nicholas R. “Nick” Williams was first elected Selectmen of the Town of New Canaan, Connecticut in 2011 and took office in November of that year. He was subsequently reelected in 2013, 2015 and 2017, in each case with substantial majorities.
Prior to becoming Selectman, he was elected to the New Canaan Board of Education in 2007 and served a four-year term on that body, including as that Board’s Vice Chairman (2009) and Chairman (2010-2011).
During his tenure on the Board of Education, Nick spearheaded several key initiatives, including the introduction of foreign language instruction in New Canaan’s elementary schools, augmenting the number of guidance counselors at New Canaan High School, and making the Board of Education the first town body to have its meetings televised.
A resident of New Canaan since 1996, Nick was born and raised in Barrington, Rhode Island. He graduated magna cum laude from Brown University (A.B., English) in 1984, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. In 1988, he received his J.D. degree from Columbia Law School, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar.
Nick is currently a senior partner and Co-Head, Americas Insurance Group, in the New York office of the leading international law firm Clifford Chance, where he specializes in mergers and acquisitions in the insurance industry.
Nick has served as a Board of Trustee at the Congregational Church of New Canaan, and also served as that organization’s General Counsel for a decade. He is a Board member of the New Canaan High School Scholarship Foundation, a member of the Exchange Club, and formerly coached soccer and flag football annually over a 12-year period.
Nick is married to Elisabeth “Whitney” LeGard Williams, who grew up in New Canaan and graduated from its public school system. They have three children, Victoria, Chase and Kent.
