Cristina Aguirre-Ross, Town Council

I am presently serving on Town Council.  I am humbled to have earned your trust and to be able to serve and represent New Canaan with honesty and integrity.

New Canaan has been my home for 26 years. My husband Marty and I have raised three daughters, Catherine, Lauren and Caroline, all of whom attended and benefited from the New Canaan Public School System.

By profession, I am an Architect, a published author and an entrepreneurial strategic planner with extensive management and organizational skills. I am a graduate of the Cooper Union, Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture.

I worked at JP Morgan in their real estate and facilities division, focusing on procedures, compliance, construction, contract negotiations, fast tracking, budgeting, financial analysis and leading teams. These are a part of the skill set that I bring to this position.

I set up practice in Connecticut and consulted for Towers Perrin, designed the New Canaan Nature Center Facilities, and renovated corporate facilities while focusing on preservation and renovation.

In wanting to play a more active role in the New Canaan community early on, I chose to involve myself in volunteer efforts for:

o    New Canaan Mounted Troop Advisory Board 10 yrs.

o    Young Women’s League Member 6 yrs.

o    Various School Fund Raisers

o    New Canaan Cares – Kitchen Tour Committee

o    New Canaan Nature Center Past Board Member

o    Norwalk Hospital Foundation 6 yrs.

o    New Canaan Women’s Republican Club – President 2 yrs.

o    New Canaan Republican Town Committee 14 yrs.

o    RTC Vice Chair 2 yrs.

o    RTC Chairman Personnel Committee 4 yrs.

I have also served the Town of NC as a member of the:

•    Town Council – 2 yrs. Presently (4 yr. term)

•    Town Council – Infrastructure & Utilities Subcommittee Co-Chair

•    Town Council – Finance & Government Subcommittee

•    Town Council – Public Safety Subcommittee

•    Open Space & Conservation Committee 2 yrs.

•    Park & Recreation Commission for 10 yr.

•    Co-Chaired the effort to purchase Irwin Park

My vision for New Canaan is one that charts a course toward options that will ultimately benefit our Town’s growth – a plan that sets the stage for longer-term planning that will help guide NC to where it should be in 1, 5, 10 and 50 years.

To start the conversation we will set goals and milestones that are both attainable and fiscally responsible, with an emphasis on making New Canaan more competitive with surrounding towns, while facilitating prudently managed growth.

In my view, it is critical to develop strategies that prioritize a positive feedback loop between our Town’s needs and those of the community at large. It would be an honor to have the opportunity to be your champion in these efforts.

My main focus is on strengthening the New Canaan community by establishing a framework for the delivery of services with full accountability and transparency as a method of doing business.  It is imperative for NC to grow in a way that is balanced, fiscally responsible and inclusive of ALL the voices in our community.

Some of the ideas I would propose to address:

o    Together create a vision for New Canaan and chart out the course of what we want New Canaan to be, to look like and to plan out its future.

o    Implement a plan that addresses obstacles to real estate sales, which will work towards increasing property values.

o    Address commuter parking, and plan a phased solution to decking the parking lots at the Lumberyard and Talmadge Hill.

o    Controlling expenditures and increases in Taxes.

o    Improving efficiencies in our budget that will lead to cost savings.

o    Preserving our downtown area and supporting /addressing downtown retailers’ needs.

o    Bringing the gas line into New Canaan.

o    Addressing emergency cell communication coverage through an open and inclusive dialogue between the town and its residents.

o    Making certain that our Town leads by example in financial accountability and transparency.

o    Implementing best practices in the segregation of financial duties; and overcoming all significant deficiencies.

o    Improving communications among all Town bodies and building consensus on the Town’s direction and goals.

o    Most importantly, implementing a more inclusive government that works for everyone equally.

I will work tirelessly to develop a framework of action that reflects and builds a community that collectively manages change and welcomes a more promising and cohesive future for our diverse population – children and senior citizens, long-term residents and newcomers alike.
